甚麼是領導What is leadership?
她的特質難以定義,卻也不是這麼困難被認出。Its qualities are difficult to define – they are not so difficult to identify.
身為領導人不會強迫其他人們追隨他,而是身先士卒帶領他們。領袖重然諾,先掏出自己給予承諾,才由其他人獲取承諾;同時透過塑造激發創意的環境、及以誠信與公平的經營來實現其承諾。Leaders don’t force other people to go along with them. They bring them along. Leaders get commitment from others by first giving it themselves, by building an environment that encourages creativity, and by operating with honesty and fairness.
身為領導人會在許多方面需要其他人們的幫忙,但是也掏出他們自己所有的更多出來。他們極具企圖心,不只是為他們自己,同時也為和他們一起打拼的人們。他們吸引、留下且開發這群人,達到人盡其才的地步。Leaders demand much of other people, but they also give much of themselves. They are ambitious – not only for themselves, but for those who work with them. They seek to attract, retain, and develop other people to their fullest abilities.
好的領導人不是獨行者。他們認清一個組織成功的策略需要結合眾人之才能和努力。領導能力乃轉變這些群眾才能化為成功果實之催化劑。Good leaders are not “lone rangers.” They recognize that an organization’s strategies for success require the combined talents and efforts of many people. Leadership is the catalyst for transforming those talents into results.
領導人他們知道當面對同一議題而有兩造不同意見時,沒有一個意見為注定是錯的。他們因而認識過度急躁且匆忙的行事無異與注重表面之膚淺行徑同類。他們對所有新點子敞開心胸,但非常仔細地探究其交互之間的影響。Leaders know that when there are two differing opinions on a single issue, one is not bound to be wrong. They recognize that hustle and rush are the allies of superficiality. They are open to new ideas, but they explore the ramifications thoroughly.
成功的領導人在情緒和智慧上朝向未來,他們不拘泥於過去。他們渴望承擔責任、創新,並起而行。他們並不滿足僅止於招呼注意所已經存在的東西。他們要勇敢向前行,創造新的事物。Successful leaders are emotionally and intellectually oriented to the future – they are not wedded to the past. They have a hunger to take responsibility, to innovate, and initiate. They are not content with merely taking care of what’s already there. They want to move forward, to create something new.
領導人提供答案,同時指引方向;提供自己的力量,同時致力奉獻;講求經驗,同時了解當下他們面對的問題,和與他們一塊工作的人們。Leaders provide answers as well as direction, offer strength as well as dedication, and speak from experience as well as understanding of the problems they face and those people they work with.
領導人的態度是反應靈活的,而不是教條式的。他們相信團結精神,而不只是符合順從就好。他們同時盡力將衝突轉變成協商一致的共識。Leaders are flexible rather than dogmatic. They believe in unity rather than conformity. And they strive to achieve consensus out of conflict.
領導就是讓人們不斷給出他們自己最好的,幫助他們可以充分發揮潛力地成長,並鼓勵他們努力實現共同的利益。Leadership is all about getting people consistently to give their best, helping them to grow to their fullest potential, and motivating them to work toward a common good.
一個好的領導人,一個有效的領導者是一個心存尊重的人。尊重是某種你為了獲得而必須擁有的東西。領導者能對組織各階層所有其他的人們顯現尊重,對於他們所做的工作、以及他們的能力、他們的願望、和他們的需求付出尊重,將發現同樣的尊重會回到自己身上。更進一步,所有有關各方將會被激勵而積極攜手進行合作。A good leader, an effective leader is one who has respect. Respect is something you have to have in order to get. A leader who has respect for other people at all levels of the organization, for the work they do, and for their abilities, their aspirations, and their needs will find that respect is returned. And all concerned will be motivated to work together.
