20221205-07 Snowsports Mammoth Lakes

I and other 2 snow-sport friends were invited by good friend Joseph to meet at his home in early morning of December 5, and then drive to Mammoth Lakes to ski/snowboard for 3 days. Joseph is already an advanced skier and snowboarder. Though James is an advanced skier, this is his first time snowboarding. Merry is still a beginning skier. I started skiing in the winter of 1979. I was able to ski on intermediate runs the afternoon of the first day, and black runs the second day. For all the ski resorts that I have been to, there weren’t many runs that I could not deal with. However, though having snowboarded for 3 half days before, I still could not handle the beginner’s runs. Old dogs can’t learn new tricks easily! In these 3 days, I snowboarded 3 half days on beginner runs and had improved to be able to do heel side and toe side pretty well. However, I still had problem switching between the two technics of snowboarding. In the morning of the third day, I fumbled and cartwheeled while switching from heel side to toe side, twisting my right knee and leg. The pain was so severe that I thought I would need to ask someone to go down the slope to hail a paramedic to come to take me down in a sled. However, after few minutes of rest, the pain receded substantially and I was able to snowboard easily again. This shows that my old bones are still pretty tough. A special treat of this ski/snowboard trip was the soaking in a wild hot spring located south of the Mammoth Lakes Airport on the 2nd night. We needed to walk about half a mile on the snow and icy trail to the primitive hot spring pool. The pool can accommodate about 10 people. It was a great experience soaking in the hot spring while surrounded by the white snow and under the full moon just rose over the mountains top.
